I represent Anna Maria Maestre, a free negra woman born in Louisiana. At the time of the 1820 census of Pensacola, I was 40 years old. I lived with Luis Maestre, a Spanish business owner, and our two children. Families of mixed ethnicity like ours were quite common in Spanish West Florida, as the Spanish did not have the same social taboos as Anglo-American society. I am buried in St. Michael’s cemetery.
