I represent Luis Maestre, a European man born in Valencia, Spain. At the time of the 1820 census of Pensacola, I was 52 years old. I was a pulpero, which can be translated as grocer or tavernkeeper. I lived with Ana Maria Maestre, a free negra woman, and our two children. Families of mixed ethnicity like ours were quite common in Spanish West Florida, as the Spanish did not have the same social taboos as Anglo-American society. I am buried in St. Michael’s cemetery.
