I represent Jose Ortiz, a European man born in Cataluña, Spain. At the time of the 1820 census of Pensacola, I was 60 years old, and a shopkeeper. I lived with Genoveva, a free negra woman who worked as a laundress. It is likely that Genoveva and I were living as husband and wife (the Spanish did not have the same social taboos against this as the Anglo-Americans), and she may have used my surname.
