I represent Maria Dolores, an enslaved negra woman in the household of Doña Josefa Bonifay Posse de Rioboo. I appear as the mother of Nicolasa Micaela, baptized by Father Coleman at St. Michael’s on October 4, 1817 (born on September 10). Her father is no conocido (unknown) which usually means that the father could not or did not want to acknowledge the child.
Josefa and her husband, Tomas, had 6 children in 1820. In 1823 Doña Josefa sold me to Jacques Sorbies for $400, describing me as being about 30 years old, “a slave for life.”
