2nd Lt Jose Ignacio Cruzat

I respresent Jose Ignacio Cruzat, Lieutentant of the Regiment of Louisiana, Infantry of the line. I was born in Louisiana in about 1791. I was apponted by Governor Jose Callava as secretary and interpreter of the commission for the evacuation and delivery of the province of West Florida to the U.S. Along wtih Carlos Reggio, I certified the 1820 census of Pensacola, though I appear to have not counted myself in it.

In 1823 I petitioned for U.S. citizenship under the 1821 naturalization law. My petition said I was a native of Louisiana and had been for some years a resident of Pensacola, as had my family; they were all in Pensacola at the conclusion of the Treaty of February 22, 1819 between the U.S. and Spain, and at the surrender of the Province to the U.S. on July 17, 1821. An affidavit to the same was signed by by John de la Rua, Enrique Grand Pré, and Henry Michelet.

According to an 1839 deed, my wife was Maria Susana deVilliers.

I died on November 17, 1847, and I am buried in Catholic Cemetery in Mobile.
