I represent Antonia Mariana, an enslaved mulata woman in the household of Victoire LeSassier. I was confirmed in Pensacola on May 7, 1798, by the Bishop of Louisiana and the Floridas, Rev. Luis Peñalver y Cardenas. My mother Genoveva, is listed in the record. I was listed in Victoire LeSassier’s 1830 complaint of divorce from Don Pedro de Alba as being 18 years old and a cook, though this probably referred to my age in 1813, when the late Don Jose Noriega’s property was divided between Victoire and her son. In 1832, I purchased my freedom from Mme. LeSassier for the sum of $500, and my age is given as about 33 years old. In her 1833 will, Mme. LeSassier refers to me as a mulato girl who was formerly her slave.
