I represent Anxieta Grandpre, a free parda girl born in Pensacola. At the time of the 1820 census of Pensacola, I was 1 year old. I lived with my parents: Don Enrique de Grandpre, a retired Spanish military officer, and Josefa Lavalle, a free parda woman who worked as a seamstress. Families of mixed ethnicity like ours were quite common in Spanish West Florida, as the Spanish did not have the same social taboos as Anglo-American society. Also in our household was another free parda woman whose relationship to us is not clear.
