Charlotte (Noriega)

I represent Charlotte, a mulata enslaved woman in the household of Victoire LeSassier. I was probably born in Pensacola and I was confirmed there on May 7, 1798, by the Bishop of Louisiana and the Floridas, Rev. Luis Peñalver y Cardenas. I am called “Carlota” in that record, and my mother Ester (an enslaved negra woman in the same household) is also listed. I was listed in Victoire LeSassier’s 1830 complaint of divorce from Don Pedro de Alba as a cook and launderss; I was 17 years old , though this probably referred to my age in 1813, when the late Don Jose Noriega’s property was divided between Victoire and her son. In the court papers associated with the divorce, I was called Mme. LeSassier’s favorite servant, and it was reported that she was irritated when she sent for me and Don Pedro said I was busy and sent Amy instead. In the 1833 will of Victoire LeSassier, she indicated I was the daughter of the negra woman Ester, and granted both my mother and I our freedom. My daughter was Adele Noriega, a quadroon girl of 5 at the time of the changing of the flags.
