I represent Clara Garcia, a free parda woman born in Pensacola. At the time of the 1820 census of Pensacola, I was 30 years old and living in the household of a Spaniard named Cayetano Garcia, my son Jose Esteban, and a Spanish baker. As I was listed with his surname, Cayetano and I may have been living as husband and wife (the Spanish did not have the same social taboos against this as the Anglo-Americans).
