I represent Don Enrique Grandpre, a blanco man born in Louisiana. At the time of the 1820 census of Pensacola, I was 30 years old, living with the free parda woman Josefa Lavalle and our daughter, Annieta Grandpre. One more free parda woman shared our household but her relationship to us is unclear. Families of mixed ethnicity like ours were quite common in Spanish West Florida, as the Spanish did not have the same social taboos as Anglo-American society. In 1820 I was a retired Sub-lieutneant in the Spanish military. I was the 3rd son of Col. Carlos de Grand-Pré – a Spanish officer and governor of Baton Rouge – and Hélène Price Pager.
