Don Felipe Prieto

Photo representing Don Felipe Prieto

Represented by Stephen Davis

I represent Don Felipe Prieto, a European man born in Madrid, Spain. I was the son of Pedro and Isabel de los Cobos. At the time of the 1820 census of Pensacola, I was 40 years old, and a widower. I was a civil servant in the Spanish government – in my land grant of 800 arpents on the middle arm of Bayou Chico, I am called “an assistant to the Royal Supply Stores,” also known as the guarda almacen, or storehouse keeper. I lived with Mariana Prieto, a mestiza woman, and we had two children. Families of mixed ethnicity like ours were quite common in Spanish West Florida, as the Spanish did not have the same social taboos as Anglo-American society. Also sharing our household was a German man named Federico Dayrlen whose relationship to us is not specified. In my 1824 will, I name Maria Prieto (Quigles) as my sister, Jose Hernandez as my stepbrother, and Baltasar Centeno as my stepfather.
