Doña Paula de Rivas Caro

Photo representing Doña Paula de Rivas Caro

Represented by Pam Watts

I represent Doña Paula de Rivas Caro, a blanca woman born in New Orleans around 1793. I was the daughter of Maria Moreno and Gabriel de Rivas, described in an 1817 request for a land grant as “one of the first Spanish Settlers, who was also at the Conquest of this Province [1781].”

My husband, Jose E. Caro, and I have two marriage records: one at the Cathedral of St. Louis in New Orleans on March 14, 1812; and one at St. Michael’s parish in Pensacola on June 171, 1814. At the time of the 1820 census of Pensacola, I was 27 years old. Jose and I had four young children.

The burial records of St. Michael’s parish record my death: April 22, 1849 – and the record notes I was buried by my friends as there was no officiating priest in Pensacola at the time. My age is given as 57 years, 3 months and 7 days.
