Edward Augustus Rutledge

I represent Edward Augustus Rutledge. I served General Andrew Jackson as his Spanish translator and interpreter in the transition negotiations in 1821. I was born in 1802. I was the grandson of two signers of the Declaration of Independence (Edward Rutledge and Arthur Middleton of South Carolina). Upon his resignation as governor of Florida, Jackson recommended me to be his replacement. But I suffered from what we now call depression, and in 1826, I took my own life by shooting myself in the head in Saratoga Springs, New York. My grave was discovered in 2007 by family researchers.
