I represent Elijah McCurdy. I was born in 1793 in Chester Cournty, South Carolina. I lived in the Escambia River District, specifically present day Santa Rosa County around Chumuckla. My household was part of an Anglo-American population that settled and farmed land in Spanish territory without permission of the Spanish government, but which was tolerated because it supplied Pensacola with produce. I came from Chester County, South Carolina, and at the time of the 1820 census of the Escambia River District, I was 27 years old and married to Mattie Bowen McCurdy. We had one young son. We lived on a small farm with a few cows and hogs.
I was a veteran of the War of 1812, and was discharged at St. Marks in 1818 and married Mattie in 1819. I received a land grant for my military service that is believed to be around the Chumuckla area. I was a voter and juror in Escambia County throughout the 1820s. I married Barbara Sunday in 1831 and we had 14 children. I died in 1878 and may be buried in Century, but more likely in the Coon Hill Cemetery in Santa Rosa County.
