I represent Eulalia de la Luz Garzon. I am described as a parda woman in the 1820 census of Pensacola, but would more appropriately be called mestiza as I am of Indian blood. I was born in Pensacola. My parents were Antonio Garzon, “interpreter to the Indians at Pensacola,” and Maria Aniguiche Garzon, “Indian of the Tallapoosa or Creek nation,” as they were described in my claim to the land commonly known as “Garzon’s Point.”
At the time of the 1820 census of Pensacola, I was 25 years old and living in the household with Juan Perez, a Spaniard, and our son. Families of mixed ethnicity like ours were quite common in Spanish West Florida, as the Spanish did not have the same social taboos as Anglo-American society. I was the sole heir to all of Juan Perez’ worldly goods in his 1833 will.
