Euphrosina Hinnard

Represented by Tywanda Adjaye

I represent Euphrasina Hinnard, a free parda woman born in New Orleans in 1775. My first name is also seen as Euphrosine, and my last name is sometimes spelled Hinard or Hisnard. I am the child of Don Francisco Hisnard of New Orleans and his consort, the free parda woman Maria (or Mariana) Grondel.

I had a previous relationship with Don Nicolas Maria Vidal, the lieutenant governor of Louisiana, with whom I had children. Our family came to Pensacola after the Louisiana Purchase.

At the time of the 1820 census of Pensacola, I was 43 years old; my children with Don Nicolas Vidal, who passed away in 1806, were grown and I had four younger children. I was listed in that census as a saleslady, but that tells only part of the story of my wealth and success. I even owned slaves myself. I died in New Orleans in 1866.
