Ignacia (Roche)

I represent Ignacia, a negra woman enslaved in the household of Don Jose Roche. I was baptized by Fr. Josef de Agustin Briones, Chaplain of the Louisiana Regiment of Infantry at St. Michael’s on January 11, 1818, at which time my age was estimated at about 38 years old. The record names my mother, Rosa, though it gives no other information about her and my father is not mentioned at all. My baptismal record states I was a native of Virginia. I would have been about 41 years old at the changing of the flags.
