Isabel Bertrand

Photo representing Isabel Bertrand

Represented by Dr. Vanessa Phillips

I represent Isabel Bertrand, a free parda woman born in Pensacola. At the time of the 1820 census of Pensacola, I was 27 years old, living with my three young children and working as a shopkeeper. In the 1850 census of Escambia County, I was living in the household of Silvestre Gomez (interestingly, I am the real estate owner in the household, not him), and my 1879 will names a daughter, a son, and two grandchildren all with the last name of Gomez. It is likely, therefore, that I am the woman buried in St. Michael’s Cemetery as Isabell Gomez, said to have died at 102 years old, though I was probably more like 75-85 years old when I died. I inherited property from and was the executrix of the Will of one Domingo Gonzalez, who was the father of the three children living with me at the time of the 1820 census.
