I represent Joseph Alexandre Goumarin, a European man born in France. I was the son of Nicholas Goumarin and Rose Thanel, both deceased at the time of my will, recorded in 1823. At the time of the 1820 census (where I am called “Jose”), I was 42 years old, making my living as a cigar maker. I lived with Ana, a free negra woman from Charleston, and our three children. Families of mixed ethnicity like ours were quite common in Spanish West Florida, as the Spanish did not have the same social taboos as Anglo-American society.
