I represent Juan Fernandez, a European man born in Castile, Spain. At the time of the 1820 census of Pensacola, I was 60 years old. I was a farmer, and lived in a more rural area outside of town. Also in my household was a free pardo man named Juan, but his relationship is unclear – he may have been a farmhand, but he may have been my son. Families of mixed ethnicity were common in Spanish West Florida, as the Spanish did not have the same social taboos as Anglo-American society.
