Juliana (Villalonga)

Photo representing Juliana (Villalonga)

Represented by Jenita Broxton

I represent Juliana, a free negra woman in the household of Juan Villalonga. I was 29, was born in Africa and was given the occupation of laundress in the 1820 census of Pensacola. It is likely that Juan Villalonga and I were living as husband and wife (the Spanish did not have the same social taboos against this as the Anglo-Americans), and I may have used his surname. There are three children listed in the household with us that are probably ours, but as they are listed as negro rather than pardo, there is some uncertainty.
