I represent Major James E. Dinkins. I was attached to the 5th U.S. Regiment of Infantry but I commanded the U.S. troops – made up of the 4th Infantry and 4th Artillery – at Ft. Barrancas at the time of the transition. I was born in South Carolina, joined the Army as a lieutenant in 1808, and had been with General Andrew Jackson since the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. I died in late 1822 in Pensacola. I was buried at Ft. Barrancas then reinterred in Cantonment Clinch cemetery to lay with my wife, Ellen, who died in New Orleans in 1826.
