Manuel Gonzalez

I represent Manuel Gonzalez, a European man born in Valencia, Spain. At the time of the 1820 census of Pensacola, I was 56 years old and was a pulpero, which can be translated as grocer or tavernkeeper. In my household was the free negra woman Ysabel Folch and our three children. Families of mixed ethnicity like ours were quite common in Spanish West Florida, as the Spanish did not have the same social taboos as Anglo-American society. (Note: There were three men named Manuel Gonzalez in the Pensacola area at the time: Me, a Don Manuel Gonzalez who was a wealthy rancher, and a Don Manuel Gonzalez who was most likely a fisherman.)
