I represent Maria, a negra woman enslaved in the household of Doña Carlota Constanza de Grand Pré, the widow Gayarre. I appear in my daughter’s 1821 baptismal record from St. Michael’s. Maria Ysidra was born into slavery by virtue of my enslaved status, and her father was listed as no conocido (unknown) – though this usually means the man either did not want, or was unable, to acknowledge the child.
