I represent Maria Isabel, a negra woman enslaved in the household of Don Juan Innerarity. I appear in my son’s 1819 baptismal record from St. Michael’s. Juan Bautista was born into slavery by virtue of my enslaved status, and his father was listed as no conocido (unknown) – though this usually means the man either did not want, or was unable, to acknowledge the child.
