Marianne (Quigles)

I represent Marianne, and enslaved negra girl in the household of Don Miguel and Doña Maria Prieto Quigles. I was born in Pensacola around 1814. In March 1827, I was sold to Francis Pasquier for $400 and described as being about 13 years old. In December of the same year, I was sold to Francis Bobe, again for $400. In both deeds, I was described as “a Creole slave of this place,” meaning I was born in Pensacola. (As I was also described as either “negro” or “black,” they are using “Creole” to mean a person born in the American colony and not – as many modern Pensacolians use the term – to mean a person of mixed race.)
