I represent an enslaved person in the household of Finlay McCaskill. We lived in the Escambia River District, which included both banks of the Escambia River from the Alabama line into present day Santa Rosa County, about 25-40 miles north of Pensacola as it existed in 1820. The McCaskill household was part of an Anglo-American population that settled and farmed land in Spanish territory without permission of the Spanish government, but which was tolerated because it supplied Pensacola with produce. Finlay McCaskilll was 54 years old, came from Scotland, and appears to have owned a large farm with cows and hogs. The family included his wife, Peggy, 8 children between the ages of 11 and 27 years, and 5 enslaved people. As with all enslaved persons in this census, no name or age was given for me.
