Unnamed Enslaved Person (Moore)

I represent an enslaved person in the household of Thomas Moore. We lived in the Escambia River District, which included both banks of the Escambia River from the Alabama line into present day Santa Rosa County, about 25-40 miles north of Pensacola as it existed in 1820. The Moore household was part of an Anglo-American population that settled and farmed land in Spanish territory without permission of the Spanish government, but which was tolerated because it supplied Pensacola with produce. Thomas Moore was 45 years old and appears to have owned a moderate-sized farm with cattle and hogs. The family included Thomas’ wife, Nancy, 9 children between the ages of 2 and 19 years, and me. As with all enslaved persons in this census, no name or age was given for me.
