I represent an enslaved person in the household of Abraham Pringle. We lived in the Escambia River District, which included both banks of the Escambia River from the Alabama line into present day Santa Rosa County, about 25-40 miles north of Pensacola as it existed in 1820. The Pringle household was part of an Anglo-American population that settled and farmed land in Spanish territory without permission of the Spanish government, but which was tolerated because it supplied Pensacola with produce. Abraham Pringle was 44 years old and appears to have owned a large farm with cattle and hogs. The family included Abraham’s wife, Mary, 6 children between the ages of 5 and 16 years, and 9 enslaved Black people. As with all enslaved persons in this census, no name or age was given for me.
