Unnamed Enslaved Woman (McLennan)

I represent an enslaved woman in the household of Catherine McLennan. We lived in the Escambia River District, which included both banks of the Escambia River from the Alabama line into present day Santa Rosa County, about 25-40 miles north of Pensacola as it existed in 1820. The McLennan household was part of an Anglo-American population that settled and farmed land in Spanish territory without permission of the Spanish government, but which was tolerated because it supplied Pensacola with produce. Catherine McLenan was a widow, 65 years old; she came from Scotland, and appears to have owned a moderately-sized farm with cattle and hogs. The family included 9 children between the ages of 10 and 25 years, and me. As with all enslaved persons in this census, no name or age was given for me.
