Isadore/Ysidra (de Alba)

Photo representing Isadore/Ysidra (de Alba)

Represented by Katrina Rease Jackson

I represent Ysidra, an enslaved mulata woman in the household of Don Pedro de Alba. My mother was Venus, an enslaved negra woman in the same household. In 1819, I was mentioned in the case of F.T. Commyns vs. E. Latady, where I was listed among the property given by Don Pedro de Alba to his son on the eve of his wedding to Constance de Tala. I was 22 years old. By the time of Don Pedro’s will in April 1835, I had been returned to him and was counted among the property he left to his grandson, Juan de Alba. I am called Isadore in the will.

In September of 1835, Don Pedro freed a slave named Isadora for the sum of $500 paid by Alexander L. Lamb. Isadora had been raised in his family from infancy, a slave for life, and was described as being 29 years old. This is a bit young to match up to my being 22 in 1817, but it is not out of the question that Isadora is me.
