Adelaide (Ortiz)

I represent Adelaide, a mulata woman enslaved in the household of Jose Ortiz. I appear in my daughters’ 1817 and 1820 baptismal records from St. Michael’s. Margarita Estaquia was born into slavery by virtue of my enslaved status, but Luisa Anastacia was freed by the time of her baptism as she is referred to as a niña libre in the record. Their father was not mentioned in Margarita Estaquia’s record and was listed as no conocido (unknown) in Luisa Anastacia’s – in both cases, it usually means the man either did not want, or was unable, to acknowledge the child.
