I represent Luisa Anastacia, a girl of color born into the household of Jose Ortiz. I was baptized by Father Coleman at St. Michael’s on May 14, 1820, a couple of weeks after my birth. At that time, I was recorded as a niña libre, indicating Don Jose had freed me, depsite the status of my mother, Adelaide, a mulata woman enslaved in his household. My father is listed as “no conocido,” or unknown, but that usually means that the man either did not want or was not able to acknowledge me. I had an older sister named Margarita Estaquia.
