Capt. James L. Hanham

Represented by Deputy Chief of Police Kevin Christman

I represent Captain James R. Hanham. I was born in England and entered the army in Maryland in 1805 as a lieutenant of artillery. I was promoted to Captain in 1811 and served through the War of 1812. My unit was disbanded in 1815. My role in the transition appears to be as a member of General Andrew Jackson‘s staff, as I am mentioned as carrying General Jackson’s orders and correspondence between Pensacola and St. Augustine. By 1823 I was serving as sheriff of St. Johns County. I was appointed military storekeeper in St. Augustine in 1838, a post I held until 1862, when I became too sick to serve and retired – over 50 years of service.
