Major Gen. Andrew Jackson

Photo representing Major Gen. Andrew Jackson

Represented by Collier Merrill

I represent General Andrew Jackson. I was born in 1767 in The Waxhaws in what is now North Carolina. I married Rachel Donelson Robards. I served in Pensacola several times, including 1812 and 1818, as commander in chief of the Division of the South, U.S. Army. In 1821, I accepted the governorship of Florida and the task of receiving the territory from the Spanish government. My long history in Pensacola meant I had friends and enemies among the residents, and I famously butted heads with the Spanish governor, Don Jose Callava. But I saw the transition through, formed a new government for the city of Pensacola, Escambia County, and for the Territory of Florida, before I handed in my resignation. I served in the U.S. Senate and then as President. I have a mixed legacy because of my sometimes brutal actions against Native Americans and African Americans, but my performance as president and my service to my country have been lauded by many. Study my life and see what you think.
