Col. William King

Photo representing Col. William King

I represent Col. William King. I was born in Delaware and entered the army as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1808. I served in the War of 1812 and commanded the 4th Infantry under General Andrew Jackson when he occupied Pensacola in 1818. General Jackson appointed me the military and civil governor of West Florida in 1818. I was replaced a year later by Spanish Governor Jose Maria Callava, and subsequently retired from the army, but my family and I stayed in the area. I died in 1826, near Mobile. Fort King, near Ocala, Florida, was named for me.
