Dorotea Ariola

Photo representing Dorotea Ariola

Represented by Shannon Giovanini

I represent Dorotea, a free morena woman, 27 years old at the time of the 1820 census of Pensacola. I lived with Cristobal Ariola, an Italian carpenter, and our four children. We also shared our home with a free negra woman named Elena Amberg, whose relationship to us is not specified. Families of mixed ethnicity like ours were quite common in Spanish West Florida, as the Spanish did not have the same social taboos as Anglo-American society. I was born in Louisiana, and worked as a seamstress.
