I represent Elizabeth “Betsy” Lewis, a free woman of color living in Escambia County at the time of the changing of the flags. I was associated with Jakob Kelker, a man of Swiss descent from Pennsylvania, and had three children with him. When Jakob died intestate in 1827, his probate papers mentioned that he had given me a gold watch as a gift for my children: John, Frederick, and Maria. I was in the 1830 Escambia County census, but nothing more is known of me at this time.
