I represent Maria Kelker, daughter of Jakob Kelker, a man of Swiss descent, and Elizabeth “Betsy” Lewis, a free woman of color. I was born in 1818, in what was then Escambia County but would later be Santa Rosa County. I was baptized by Father Coleman at St. Michael’s on December 2, 1818, at which time Jakob Kelker acknowledged me as his daughter. Not much else is known about me at this time.
