Represented by Roger Vinson

I represent Henry Marie Brackenridge. I was born in 1786 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. As a child, I was sent to Louisiana to receive a French education. I studied law and practiced for some years before becoming attorney general for the Orleans Territory in 1811. I provided intelligence regarding the area to the American government during the War of 1812. I traveled to South America on behalf of the Monroe administration and when I returned to the U.S., I was elected to the Maryland state legislature. I introduced an unpopular measure to allow Jews to vote. During other travels in 1821, I ran into General Andrew Jackson and impressed him with my intelligence. This led to my appointment as his Spanish translator and secretary during the transition of Florida to American government. General Jackson saw me appointed as a territorial judge for West Florida. I remained in Florida until 1821, then became critical of the Jackson presidential administration. I went home to Pennsylvania and remained involved in politics and writing until my death in 1871.
