I represent Jose Domingo Sausa (which is seen spelled “Sousa” in some documents), a European man born in Orotava in the Canary Islands. My parents were Patricio and Paula Francia Sausa, also from Orotava. My first wife was Michaela Rodriguez, and after she died I married Maria Garcia in 1794 in New Orleans.
I served in the Spanish military, as a Sergeant of Militia in the Louisiana Regiment and as a clerk to the Spanish governor, Jose Callava. I was involved in almost every aspect of the transition of power to the Americans. At the time of the 1820 census of Pensacola, I was 58 years old. Maria and I had five children.
