I represent Jose Salvador Ruby, a free pardo man born in Pensacola. At the time of the 1820 census of Pensacola, I was 30 years old. I lived with my parents: Salvador Ruby, a free pardo man who worked as a shoemaker; and Maria Carlota Ruby, a free parda woman who worked as a laundress; and my 8 siblings. I made my living as a carpenter. In 1842, I bought seven enslaved people between infancy and 21 years old from the Estate of Marcos de Villiers for $3,000, and immediately filed their deed of manumission “for love and affection.” This may indicate a familial relationship; more research will be needed.
