I represent Juana Cirila Bertand, a free mulata girl born in Pensacola in 1818. I was baptized by Father Josef de Agustin Briones, Chaplain of the Louisiana Regiment of Infantry, at St. Michael’s on March 28, 1818, a few weeks after my birth. At the time of the 1820 census of Pensacola, I was 2 years old and lived in a house with my mother, the free mulata woman Ysabel Bertrand (who was a shopkeeper), and my two older sisters. On my baptismal record, my father, Domingo Gonazales, acknowledged me as his hija natural.
