Julia (Vilaseca)

I represent Julia, a negra woman enslaved in the household of Don Tomas Vilaseca. I appear in my son’s 1819 baptismal record from St. Michael’s. Cesario Sebastian Jose was born into slavery by virtue of my enslaved status, and his father was listed as no conocido (unknown) – though this usually means the man either did not want, or was unable, to acknowledge the child.

I, along with my four sons, was sold to Francisco Bobe for a total of $2,000 in 1829. I was described as being about 40 years old, bought in the City of New Orleans in the year 1803 and brought to Pensacola by Don Tomas in either 1811 of 1816, where I had resided ever since.
