Maria Dolores Pedrasa

Photo representing Maria Dolores Pedrasa

Represented by Lorette

I represent Maria Dolores Pedrasa, a free woman of color born in Louisiana. At the time of the 1820 census of Pensacola, I was 28 years old and making my living as a seamstress. I lived in the household of Diego Reyes. It is likely that we were living as husband and wife (the Spanish did not have the same social taboos against this as the Anglo-Americans).

Though I have no surname in the 1820 census, I am probably the Maria Dolores that was made the sole heir of Diego Reyes’ estate in his 1823 will – which included a lot in the village of San Carlos de Barrancas. In 1839 Dolores Pedrasa (Maria D. Pedrasa in the 1850 census, born ca. 1792 in Lousiana) sold a lot in the village of San Carlos de Barrancas.
