I represent Maria Francisca Garreta, a free negra woman born in Africa. At the time of the 1820 census of Pensacola, I was 23 years old. I lived with Francisco Llopis, a Spanish business owner. We lived as husband and wife (the Spanish did not have the same social taboos against this as the Anglo-Americans). Francisco named me in his 1827 will as the mother of his natural children (I was called morena in the will, which means “dark,” or “brown.”)
