I represent Maria, a negra woman enslaved in the household of Don Carlos LeBaron. I appear in my son’s 1817 baptismal record from St. Michael’s. Zeferino was born into slavery by virtue of my enslaved status, and his father was not mentioned – this usually means the man either did not want, or was unable, to acknowledge the child.
