Maria Rosa (Garcia)

Photo representing Maria Rosa (Garcia)

Represented by Adriannette Williams

I represent Maria Rosa, a free negra woman in the household of Benito Garcia. I came from Port-au-Prince, Haiti and was 27 years old in 1820. Also in the Garcia household were three pardo children who are probably mine, all born in Louisiana: Josefa, 7; Desiderio, 2; and Remigio, 1. Benito Garcia was a pulpero, which can be translated as either “grocer” or “tavern keeper.”
