I represent Mariana Alba, a free negra woman born in Louisiana but living in Pensacola. At the time of the 1820 census of Pensacola, I was 50 years old, working as a laundress, and living with two other free women of color (one of whom, Gertrudis Alba, was probably my daughter) and Genoveva Ham. Adolfo, Gertrudis’ 3-year-old son, also lived with us. Gertrudis’ daughter, Maria Ana Alba, who was born after the 1820 census and would have been 2 months old at the changing of the flags, would probably have been living with us in 1821 as well.
