I represent Rosalie or Rosalia, a mulata woman living in the household of Jacques Sorbies and his consort, the free woman of color Maria Vellon. At the time of the exchange of flags, I was about 20 years old and I had an infant child, Ana Simeona Marchand, called “Nannette”. She was baptized at St. Michael’s on February 17, 1821, a few weeks after her birth. Her father was a man named Pedro (perhaps Pierre) Marchand whom researchers have not yet identified.
I am named in a deed from 1823 where Jacques Sorbies sold me to Maria Vellon for $500; and it details that I was purchased by Sorbies from Jose Marcos Fio in 1819. My daughter was granted her freedom upon the death of Maria Vellon in an 1824 deed of manumission.
